Chapter 5Sleeper Temple

The Dreamer's Nightmare

The Sleeper won't be the only thing that's been stirring inside the temple ...

3 objectivesReward: Lightbringer

Xardas sends you into the Sleeper's Temple to bring back the five Focus Stones and the Strange Sword before he can move against the Sleeper. It is the hardest stretch in the game: undead orc shamans, rooms packed with Skeletons and Minecrawlers, lethal traps, and a long chain of switch-and-gate puzzles. Several hits in here can kill you outright, so go in fully prepared.

Before You Start

Treat this like a gauntlet and kit yourself out before you step inside.

  • Bring the strongest armor you own.
  • Carry a deep stock of healing potions.
  • Keep a bow and plenty of arrows, since the locked doors only open when you shoot the colored lights above them.
  • Pull enemies one at a time instead of charging into a group.

Some attacks in here can drop you in a single hit, so save often.

Into the Temple

Clear the first wave of enemies, cross to the back of the entrance, then head up and to the right and take the steps down. Kill the Skeleton waiting at the bottom and go left into the first puzzle room.

Statue Puzzle

Each figure has a symbol carved on its base, and you rotate the right ones until they face their matching symbol.

  • Statue to the right of the main entrance: turn it one step to the right.
  • Statue at the back middle: point it to roughly eleven o'clock.
  • Statue on the right side with no visible sigil: turn it toward the remaining sigil on the far right.

The central console then rises and shows the symbol sequence you need for the next puzzle.

Wheel Puzzle

Go back to the first main room where you fought the Skeletons and set the three wheels.

  • Left wheel: turn left once.
  • Middle wheel: turn left twice, until it shows three lines with a single line crossing them.
  • Right wheel: turn three times, until it shows the spiked-circle symbol.

The gate on the right opens.

Through the Caves

Go through the new gate, clear the enemies, and head down and to the right into the rocky cave. Inside, go immediately right, kill the Minecrawler, and loot the pool at the far end. Backtrack out and push forward, pulling the enemies ahead one at a time. Keep heading right, up through the caves, right again, and past more Skeletons until you reach a brighter, well-lit chamber.

Disc Puzzle and Varrag Kasorg

Wheels ring this room and patterns mark the floor. Working from the left:

  • First wheel: turn left once.
  • Second wheel: turn left twice.
  • Third wheel: turn left twice.

Then step onto the raised disc in the center and turn it until its blank section sits at the bottom. Varrag Kasorg appears. Kill him and loot the Lightbringer, the first Focus Stone, before you move on.

The Lightning Corridor

Head back through the lightning corridor and drop into the room you came from. Jump across the pillar into the room ahead, then drop through the hole in the floor, using the ledges to climb down rather than falling straight to the bottom. At the bottom, pull the handle beside the door, step into the room at the foot of the stairs, and kill the enemy inside. Loot everything, the chests especially.

The middle chest holds a handle you need for a later puzzle. Take it now, or you will not be able to cross the platforms further in.

Green Door and Varrag Hashor

Return to the main room and clear the enemies on the left first. Shoot the green light above the door with your bow, then enter the green corridor. At the end, kill Varrag Hashor and loot the Worldcleaver, the second Focus Stone. Loot the central console in that room as well.

The Platform Puzzle

Back in the main room, go left to the handle puzzle and fit the handle you took from the middle chest.

  • Pull the left handle first.
  • Then pull the middle handle.

The middle platform sinks faster than the left, so that order leaves you enough time to cross. Jump across all three platforms and continue into the next section.

Red Door and Varrag Unhilqt

Clear the next area, including an enemy waiting in the room on the left. Return to the doorway, shoot the red light above it, and enter the red room. Kill Varrag Unhilqt and take the Timesplinter, the third Focus Stone, then sweep the upper red room for extra loot before moving on.

The Blood Channel

Drop into the yellow room and keep descending into the next red room, killing the Minecrawlers on the way. Go into the right-hand room first, turn around and shoot the red light to open the gate, then pull the handle inside to start the blood flowing. Now redirect it through the channels in order.

  • Turn the nearby handle to nine o'clock so the blood pours into the large tube on the left, and let it overflow.
  • Cross to the opposite side and turn that handle to three o'clock, letting it overflow too.
  • Go back to the first side and turn its handle to three o'clock.
  • Return to the opposite side and turn that one to nine o'clock, which routes the blood into the central channel.
  • Finally, turn the central handle to horizontal to send it through into the main room.
The Spike Trap Room

The green lights on the floor set off spikes that can kill you in one hit.

Follow the blood into the next room with your bow ready. Shoot the red light above the room, move in fast, turn and shoot the next target, then pull the handle on the right to push more blood through. Wait for it to reach the main room and a cutscene, followed by another fight, will trigger.

The Furnace

After the cutscene, go straight ahead and up the stairs through more enemies. Enter the red room and climb the wall. If you have not learned Climbing there is a way around, and either route leads to the furnace. At the furnace, drop down, clear the enemies, take the stairs down, head left, and follow the path around to the large handle on the left. Push it from nine o'clock around to three o'clock, which takes a while to complete.

The Upper Halls

Leave the furnace and head back left, down the steps. Instead of going up and right the way you came, go over, down to the left, around to the right, right again, and up. At the end of the corridor a door opens onto a chest, so loot it. To carry on, climb to the top and head left up the stairs. Explore the area for loot: in the room on the left, kill the enemy and loot the two chests facing each other, then spin the wheel to open the large gate. Drop down from the bridge and continue forward.

The Purple-Smoke Shaman

This shaman fights inside a cloud of purple smoke that can kill you in a single hit. Keep moving and never stand still in it.

Cross the bridge, defeat him, and loot the fourth Focus Stone.

The Lava Spiral

Backtrack to the stony area and follow the route toward the lava. Go down the stairs, left at the bottom, follow the lava under the first bridge and then the second, and immediately jump up on the left. This drops you at the foot of a spiral walkway with three more bosses.

  • First cave on the right: go in, kill the boss, and follow the ghost back out.
  • Next nook on the right: kill that one too.
  • Top of the spiral: step through the triangular doorway and finish the third.

When these enemies breathe fire, stand behind them. The flames sweep downward instead of spreading around the room.

Once all three are down they form a bridge for you to cross.

The Final Guardian and the Strange Sword

Cross the new bridge and take on the final guardian. Kill it and loot the Fiendeye, the last Focus Stone. Turn around and pick up the glowing Strange Sword. With all five Focus Stones and the blade in hand you can leave the temple. Teleport back to Xardas, climb to his castle, and speak with him to finish The Dreamer's Nightmare.
