He will only hand over the ore supply list to a vouched Shadow hopeful (with Diego's password); a freshie asking for it is told to "piss off". Later he only agrees to help reach the minecrawler nest after you fetch a replacement cog for a broken ore crusher.

Items Ian carries in Gothic 1 Remake.
Ian can be found in the Old Mine (Sect Follower).
You: I'll go take a look around.
Ian: Just don't make no trouble.
You: Where am I supposed to find a replacement gear?
Ian: Figurin' that out is part o' the job.
Ian: But there's an old crusher in a side tunnel, from before the Barrier. Who knows, maybe you'll get lucky.
You: I found that cog you wanted.
Ian: Pff, I'll be damned, you did. Not bad. Here - for your efforts.
You: "The crawlers look mighty hungry."
Ian: Well, well ... a Shadow hopeful, are you? Sure, here's the list. Tell Diego to get a wiggle on.
You: Doesn't this mine belong to Gomez?
Ian: How funny. Yes, of course it belongs to Gomez - but as long as he isn't here, I'm in charge.
You: Are you Ian?
Ian: That's right, I am. And this is MY mine - so don't you try nothin' funny.
You: How do you forge it "properly?"
Ian: If you're lookin' to expand into the business, forget about it - even Stone, our best smith, can't forge it properly.
Ian: You need a special forge for that, and the only engineers who know how to make them live up in Nordmar.
You: Any advice you could give me about the mine?
Ian: Just be careful, especially in the unmanned tunnels - there are dozens of minecrawlers. It's safest if you stay in the main shaft.
Ian: Odds are you'll run into a couple of templars as well - they hunt crawlers, so if you ever find yourself getting chased by one, find the nearest templar and he'll take care of it.
You: Got it. Anything else?
Ian: Yes: don't keep my lads from doing their work.
You: I won't.
You: This is ore isn't ordinary, though, is it? I heard it's magical.
Ian: I guess you could call it that - when you forge it properly, the weapons become near unbreakable and sharper than a snapper's fangs.
Ian: Two qualities that, as you can imagine, any general would want for his troops.
You: Y'Berion sent me. We're looking for a minecrawler nest.
Ian: Why by Beliar's darkness would you want to do THAT?
You: Long story. But the templars think it's somewhere in the collapsed tunnel.
Ian: (long sigh) You're actually serious about this, ain't you? All right, here's what we're gonna do.
Ian: One of our ore crushers gave up the ghost the other day - we think it's one of the cogs.
Ian: Get me a replacement for that, and I'll think about it.
You: I cleared out that tunnel for you.
Ian: So I heard. I have to hand it to you, I didn't see that comin'. Not bad.
You: Can you tell me a thing or two about ore mining?
Ian: There ain't much to tell: we mine the nuggets for the king, two hundred sacks a month, as well as some that we smelt for our own use.
Ian: And the king uses it to supply his troops.
You: I'm here for the supply list.
Ian: Nice try, freshie. Piss off.
