How to Get the Scavenger Mount

A full walkthrough for unlocking the Scavenger Mount as early as Chapter 1 through Cohsel's Beak Performance quest, including the exact crafting materials to pre-gather, the one-day wait, the Scavenger Whistle, and where the mount cannot go.

With no conventional fast travel in the Colony, a mount is one of the few ways to cut down on foot travel. The Scavenger Mount can be unlocked as early as Chapter 1 by finishing a side quest called Beak Performance. The quest involves a multi-step fetch, but you can save a lot of running by gathering its materials before you even start it.

Find Cohsel

The quest giver is Cohsel. He is found just west of the Old Camp on the path toward the New Camp, tucked behind the Broken Tower.

To start Beak Performance, exhaust his dialogue and keep asking him about his Scavenger mount. You have to ask 3 times before he gives in and offers the quest.

Gather the Materials First

Beak Performance is a multi-step fetch quest, so collecting the required items in advance will save you a return trip. Bring the following before you talk to Cohsel.

MaterialQuantity
Kingstide5
Wolf Skin3
Leather Strips2

Wolf Skin comes from the Remove Fur hunting skill, so having that learned makes the Wolf Skin part of the gather much easier.

Finish the Quest and Wait a Day

Once you have triggered Beak Performance and worked through its steps, the quest ends with a wait of 1 day before the mount is ready. Sleep or pass the time to advance the clock, then collect your reward.

Completing the quest gives you the Scavenger Whistle. Equip the whistle in a quickslot and select it to summon your mount.

Riding and Its Limits

While mounted, the controls mirror your normal movement, including mount and dismount, sprint, and jump. The mount is for travel only, though, and there are some hard restrictions.

  • You cannot attack while mounted.
  • The mount cannot enter caves or camps. Leave it outside, head in on foot, and re-summon it with the whistle when you come back out.

Because the Scavenger will not follow you into caves or camps, treat the whistle as a recall tool. Dismount before an entrance, do your business inside, then whistle again rather than expecting the mount to be waiting where you left it.
