The gurus do not speak to outsiders; you win Baal Cadar's support during admission by casting a sleeping spell on a novice to prove your power. His rune-magic training is structured around the Circles ("I'm ready to enter the First/Second/Third/Fourth Circle"), which gate further teaching.
Swamp Camp — Chapter 1: Guru you must win over for admission; he respects power and is impressed by casting a sleeping spell on a novice
Swamp Camp — later in the story: Teaches rune magic and the progression through the magic Circles, and sells scrolls and potions

Baal Cadar can be found in the Swamp Camp (Guru).
You: I want to learn rune magic.
Baal Cadar: Hmm ... fine, I shall try.
Baal Cadar: Many can learn to understand the language of the runes, but few will ever truly understand their magic.
You: I'm ready to enter the First Circle.
Baal Cadar: Very well. Listen closely:
Baal Cadar: Many years ago, the Sleeper sent the wretched souls of the Colony a vision.
Baal Cadar: Alas, many ignored his calling, blinded as they were by their lust for ore.
Baal Cadar: Only Y'Berion and a few others heeded it, and it was they who set out to form the Brotherhood.
Baal Cadar: The moment they accepted the Sleeper into their souls was when he blessed them with the First Circle of our magic. You, too, shall find it once you allow the Sleeper's wisdom into your heart.
You: I am ready to enter the Second Circle.
Baal Cadar: Then hear my words and be enlightened.
Baal Cadar: The Sleeper guided Y'Berion and his faithful acolytes to this place. It was where they settled.
Baal Cadar: They worked without respite, days, weeks, months - and slowly, the camp grew, as more followed the Sleeper's call and joined them.
Baal Cadar: And it was through meditation and prayer that they attempted to coalesce with the Sleeper's mind.
Baal Cadar: Thus, the Second Circle was born.
You: I'm ready for the Third Circle.
Baal Cadar: Then hear my words:
Baal Cadar: The Sleeper's visions grew clearer, but alas, the focused power of the Brotherhood's minds was still not enough for true contact.
Baal Cadar: However, one of the gurus, an alchemist, found a way: he concocted an elixir from minecrawler ichor - the dreamjuice - which the Brothers were to drink before prayer. It was this that allowed their minds to converge.
Baal Cadar: Overjoyed, the novices ventured into the other camps, seeking more lost souls eager to be guided to the Sleeper's truth and, in turn, lend their willpower to the invocation.
Baal Cadar: Thus, the Third Circle was born.
You: I'm ready to enter the Fourth Circle.
Baal Cadar: So be it. Listen to my words: much time has passed since Y'Berion founded the camp, and much has changed.
Baal Cadar: Our faith grew stronger. Its roots have sunk deep into our souls, and we spread the word, as is our duty.
Baal Cadar: But we never lost sight of our true calling: to summon the Sleeper and guide him into this wretched world.
Baal Cadar: The strength of our faith, oh Brother, forms the Fourth Circle.
Baal Cadar: And with this, I have taught you all I know of our magic. You were a formidable student.
You: I want to become a novice. Can you help me?
Baal Cadar: (deep, tired sigh)
You: You look like a powerful man, master.
Baal Cadar: (scoffs in annoyance)
You: Master, your head is quite shiny today.
Baal Cadar: (annoyed sigh)
You: I am looking for scrolls and potions.
Baal Cadar: What do you think you're doing? We are meditating here!
Baal Cadar: Then again, I've never seen an outsider use the Sleeper's magic. Who taught you?
You: No one. I just read the scroll.
Baal Cadar: Well, not everybody can theory into practice right away. You seem to have a natural affinity for magic.
You: I want to improve the power of my magic.
Baal Cadar: The power of your mind is the key.
