He is the gatekeeper to the Water Mages: in Chapter 3 you can only get an audience with Saturas (High Magician of Water) by going through Cronos. He also has join/become-a-mage questions and is who you ask about destroying the barrier. He trades ore/goods.

You: I work for Lares now.
Cronos: Here, take this amulet - it'll identify you as one of our messengers. Show it to Thorus, and he'll let you in.
Cronos: And this is the letter. It's for Corristo, the Highest Fire Mage. See that it gets there safely.
You: I heard you want to destroy the barrier - how exactly are you planning to do that?
Cronos: Through that which is the reason we ended up here to begin with: the nuggets.
Cronos: In layman's terms, we plan to channel the ore's magical energy and release it in a giant burst that will "detonate" the barrier.
Cronos: We hope so. Anyway, you can imagine that amassing such a massive amount of ore attracts all sorts of blackguards and bandits.
Cronos: That is why we work with the mercenaries who keep things in order around here and protect our vault.
You: I have a letter for the highest Fire Mage. Any idea how I could get it to him?
Cronos: A letter? From whom?
You: Outside.
Cronos: Hmm ... well, we do sometimes send messengers to our brothers in the Old Camp. And we were in fact looking for a new one.
Cronos: That said, we can't just give this responsibility to anyone. Lares' men usually deliver our messages - they're crooks, but reliable when it comes to this.
You: I delivered that letter.
Cronos: As I knew you would. Here, for your efforts.
You: I want to join your camp.
Cronos: Then talk to Lares or Lee.
You: I want to become a mage.
Cronos: Many do. But surely you understand that we don't share our knowledge lightly.
Cronos: Prove your loyalty to our camp - then, and only then, we might consider your offer.
